Enlighten (Markaz at-Tanwir) gives Palestinian children and young persons the opportunity to develop computer skills and access educational information from the internet in a safe and relaxed environment.
Enlighten was established as a charity in 1999 to promote and facilitate the introduction of computer-aided learning centres in the Palestinian refugee camps of the Middle East.
Enlighten opened its first centre in Bureij camp - Gaza - in January 2000. Today the Bureij centre serves a 'flagship' role as the training and administrative centre for Enlighten's ongoing expansion in the area. It is fully equipped with 20 workstations, internet-equipped networking and an administrative office. In the year 2002, the centre issued 978 certificates of achievement to pupils and in the current period (2003) courses have been fully subscribed for the third consecutive year.
The centre employs one full-time and another part-time teacher-administrator, while several volunteer teaching staff benefit the centre by donating their time and expertise to the running of scheduled courses and extracurricular sessions.
Enlighten would like to thank the Karim Rida Said Foundation for its generous support in assisting us with our vital work in the Palestinian refugee camps.
