Enlighten is an entirely independent non-profit initiative, registered with the UK Charities Commission. Its work depends on the generous support of individuals and organisations both here in Britain and throughout the Middle East. Although the charity has worked in partnership with major international donors in the past (including the UNDP*) and continues to attract the approval and support of established funders, Enlighten's grassroots, community-based work means the its trustees strive to retain organisational independence both in terms of the program's mandate and the charity's operational decision-making. This position, vital to the credibility and quality of its work, makes Enlighten highly dependent upon individual donations received through fundraising activities.
Running a single computer-aided learning centre costs upwards of £12,000 per year, while establishing new centres involves an approximate cost of £25,000 (including an initial year of operation). Enlighten's UK volunteers undertake numerous fundraising enterprises in order to raise these funds annually; regular sponsored runs, cultural events and concerts have been arranged over the past 4 years. Nonetheless, the donations received by supportive members of the public remain the primary source of funds upon which the ongoing and increasingly vital work of the charity depends.
Sponsoring a Child
To sponsor a Palestinian child for a year costs £50. We can pledge to you that 100% of the money will go directly to computer training and internet access to a child at the centre in Bureij.
We can do this because our administrative costs in the UK are minimal and financed through long-term funding (in the financial year 2000 - 2001 over 93% of the money raised by Enlighten in England and Wales went directly to the centre in Bureij).
